We too took the Jiangsu Equestrian Team to Holland to be trained. At the time there were no equestrian stable in
the shanghai area and we had not imported any jumpers to the area. We found a stable that was training many
athletes for the Olympics and helping them purchase their horses. It was very exciting as the principle riders of the
Olympic teams arrived from the USA, Great Britain Dubai and Holland all to be coached and guided in the purchase
of their horses. We arrived with 6 young Chinese riders of which one had been trained in France. We found an apartment
to house the 6 boys and a translator in the top floor of an equestrian center we had been using as quarantine. But they
needed a place for me. I was the only woman. I found a cute little hotel in a medieval little town with about 100 inhabitants
on a canal 3 kilometers from the farm. It was a family hotel with only 4 rooms. The little tiny hotel had a restaurant and a bar.
Every evening the locals would come in to chat or play cards. The principles in the bar were Theo an international Dutch Banker
that had lived in Indonesia, Peanut an Indonesian construction worker and Fokker (which means farmer in Dutch). The star of
bar was the father of the young couple that ran the bar He came in every night with a white Chicken to have a beer. He would
come in with the White chicken under his arm. Then he would put a newspaper on top of the bar stool and his chicken would
stand there with him on the bar stool while he had a big mug of beer! So was the experience in the little town of Alderboarn.
